I purchased the Nemo Bugout Shelter before leaving knowing the mosquito population in Canada is great than the population on Planet Earth. Nonetheless, nothing prepared me or my family for the relentless mosquito attacks. Last summer while camping in northern British Columbia, I experienced mosquitos in a way I never knew possible.
If you plan on camping in Western British Columbia, you need a Nemo Bugout Shelter just to survive.
The Nemo Screen shelter provided relief from the onslaught of Canadian bugs. The nightly attacks started once we left Vancouver. I was more prepared than ever before. My wife made specialty screen covers for every window secured by rare earth magnets that are so strong, your fingernails break removing the magnets. The screens only slowed down the nasty bugs. We all had mosquito head nets. I proudly carried the 12'x12" Nemo Bugout Shelter.
The Bugout Shelter went up immediately after pulling into a campsite. Forgot the rules of paying before setting up camp. My wife stayed in the van until we created the mosquito safe zone for her.
Canadians are immune to skeeters. We witnessed them sitting shirtless in camp chairs drinking beer.
Inside the van were 2 tennis racket size electric mosquito zappers. My wife made direct contact with my head several times attempting to kill bugs. She enjoyed making contact with mosquitoes and watching the explosion of sparks and smoke. Buy the bug Zappers at Walmart, Grocery Outlet, or Amazon.
I grew up in Minnesota and spent 3 months every year under fierce attack. Compared to Canadian mosquitoes, Minnesota skeeters are in the minor leagues. In fact, they are wimpy and go into hiding when the temperature cools at night. Seems like Canadian skeeters gain strength at night. They are stealthy and hide until you are almost sleeping.
Night 1 in Canada was worse than senior high school football hell week. All 4 of us were covered with mosquito bite welts by the time we set up the Bug Out Shelter. Once inside, we witnessed the onslaught of bugs buzzing everywhere daring us to leave.
Night time trips to the bathroom were forbidden because the mosquitoes swarmed inside the van causing another hour of wifey swinging the skeeter racket.
I donned my mosquito head net and buried myself in my sleeping bag listening to my wife zap bugs all night. She complained every morning that she could not sleep. I think she was mad at me for sleeping all night while she guarded the van against mosquitoes. Whatever!
